10 Things I Think I Think

In the mood to write a little bit after that frustrating opener, and it’s been a month and a half since a 10 Things I Think I Think post.

Let’s hit it below with thoughts on Chip, Sam Bradford, Nick Foles, Cody Parkey, Billy Davis, beating the Cowboys at home, and more:

  1. Don’t hate Chip’s decision to try the field goal and take the one-point lead. Hate the way it was rushed and wish he would have used a timeout to gather more information. Talk to Dave Fipp about his range pregame, slow things down for a minute and go. Not saying it would have made the difference but with so little time on the clock, Parkey looked rushed and uncomfortable lining up.
  2. As I said, understand the call to kick the field goal, but there’s a weird trend of Chip going against his nature and getting super conservative in those situations. The Arizona game last year comes to mind immediately. This is still a team built on its offense, and it’s odd that the coach for one reason or another isn’t betting on his strengths there.
  3. Still have a ton of confidence in Parkey. My haters will have a field day if I’m wrong, but he was perfect from beyond 50 yards out last season. Way better than Alex Henery ever was or will be.
  4. Let’s talk quarterbacks, shall we? It’s going to be natural to compare Sam Bradford and Nick Foles as the season goes on with Foles winning Round 1. Both quarterbacks had the ball deep in their own territory late in the fourth quarter with their teams trailing. Foles engineered a game-tying touchdown drive and won in overtime because winning is what he does. Bradford threw a game-ending interception and lost, something that he knows a lot about since being in the NFL. People like to overrate quarterback ‘wins,’ pointing to examples such as Vince Young having a winning record as a starter, but unlike pitcher wins in baseball, there is no bullpen and less variables. Barring injury, the same quarterback plays the entire game and has the ball in his hands for nearly half of it. When only 16-games are being played as opposed to 162, the margin for error is slimmer. At some point it doesn’t matter how you win, but simply that you did. Bradford was hot, having only thrown two incompletions in the second half prior to the interception, but the end result was all too familiar. It’s unfair to say that Chip made the wrong decision after 60 minutes of football, but in order to be right, he’ll need two multiple-year trends of Bradford and Foles to reverse with only 15 games for it to happen.
  5. Given Billy Davis credit in the past but the more I watch, the more I get concerned. Not a bad defensive coordinator by any stretch, just not sure he’s a Super Bowl caliber one either.
  6. ‘Soft,’ ‘Overrated,’ ‘Bradley Fletcher,’ ‘Nnamdi.’ Byron Maxwell has been called a lot of mean things over the past day, deservedly so, but I wouldn’t make these conclusions based on one week. Julio Jones is really fucking good. That said, he’s probably lucky the Cowboys won’t have Dez Bryant on Sunday.
  7. Nelson Agholor — Great preseason, underwhelming actual debut. Nothing to worry about but hope the Eagles can get him more involved.
  8. I think Monday is the most I’ve ever seen the Eagles run a sweep play with their backs. Suppose that’s what happens when you don’t invest in guards and need an alternative to the inside zone read.
  9. Fair or not, Sunday is huge not just for this year’s team, but for Chip’s career. At some point, you need to beat the Cowboys at home. Andy Reid was very good about this early in his Eagles tenure. Chip hasn’t done it yet, and if he doesn’t do it this weekend, there will be folks who hope he doesn’t get another chance in 2016.
  10. It’s fun playing in a division where 50 percent of it is eliminated after Week 1. The Redskins and Giants are going nowhere. The Cowboys don’t have arguably the best receiver in the game and struggled on Sunday to beat a poorly coached Giants team. The sky isn’t falling, but it would be nice to see a rain cloud or two go away come 8 p.m. Sunday.

Stay Alive and Survive: Cody Parkey Kickoff Contest Week 16 Edition

Happy Saturday football, folks.

After not tasting victory for nearly three and a half weeks now, I’m hungry for one again. Cody Parkey only kicked off six times last week, and frankly, I want more today. For reference, Parkey kicked off eight times in the first Redskins game back in Week 3. The rookie also hit a key 51-yard field goal in the fourth quarter that proved to be the difference as the birds held off the Skins 37-34.

Most of you know the scenarios by now for the Eagles, and we’ll be sure to update them as Week 16 begins to unfold. Let’s hit the contest.

Tweet at me (@drewBbalis) before kickoff today guessing the number of touchbacks Parkey has AND the Redskins average starting field position on his kickoffs (far right column of the chart — sans brackets)

I got (4, 19).

While not a ton of points have been given out since Thanksgiving, the leaderboard remains tightly contested and could change quickly with a couple correct predictions, so make sure to get your guesses in.

All of your pertinent information is below along with our chart that will of course be updated throughout the afternoon.

Stay live, survive, root for Andrew Luck tomorrow.

Cody Parkey Kickoff Tracker and Contest: #BeatDallas Again Edition

Afternoon, folks. How we feeling heading into tonight?

For me, it’s a mix of cautioned confidence and anxious nervousness, but should the game rest on Cody Parkey’s leg late, I feel just fine.

During the Thanksgiving beatdown of the Cowboys, Parkey was incredibly busy as he kicked off eight times. Last week against the Seahawks was a different story as the Eagles offense struggled to move the ball most of the day against the defending Super Bowl champions. Parkey kicked off only three times.

Seattle’s defense Dallas is not though, and tonight will hopefully resemble Thanksgiving once again.

Let’s hit it as the battle for control of the NFC East goes down.

Tweet at me (@drewBbalis) before kickoff tonight guessing the number of touchbacks Parkey has AND the Cowboys average starting field position on his kickoffs (far right column of the chart — sans brackets)

I will go (5,21).

Get your guesses in. Don’t piss off Claude.

Cody Parkey Kickoff Tracker and Contest: #BackInBlack Seahawks Edition

Yours truly is a bit under the weather, and Eagles rookie Cody Parkey has been dealing with a bit of a groin injury, but neither is going to stop us from our weekly contest today and another All Black Everything day at the Linc.

Ten days ago, we were blessed with Parkey facing Dan Bailey, and now he opposes arguably an even better kicker than Bailey in Steve Hauschka, and perhaps the one thing standing behind Parkey and a Pro Bowl berth.

Screen Shot 2014-12-07 at 2.05.17 PM

Things will be incredibly interesting should today’s showdown against the defending Super Bowl champions rest on the leg of either kicker late in the contest, but ideally, the Eagles will be able to put things away before that, in part due to their rock solid special teams.

You know the drill. Let’s hit it.

Tweet at me (@drewBbalis) before kickoff today guessing the number of touchbacks Parkey has AND the Seahawks average starting field position on his kickoffs (far right column of the chart — sans brackets)

I’ll take (4, 21).

Turn Up for #BirdDay: Cody Parkey Kickoff Contest and Tracker

Guess what’s back, back again. The Cody Parkey kickoff contest is back. Tell your friends.

From our growing family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving, folks. No matter where you are taking in the holiday, we hope it’s a happy and safe one filled with delicious food and several renditions of ‘Fly Eagles Fly’ throughout the late afternoon and early evening hours.

After a brief hiatus since we were at the game last Sunday, we’re happy you’ve chosen to spend it with us.

Today’s contest will be bigger and better than anything you have seen in previous weeks, so please read a little more to make sure you maximize your point possibilities.

Guess the correct number of touchbacks: Two points

Guess the correct average starting field position (far right, sans brackets): Four points

Guess the correct cumulative average starting field position (left, with brackets): One point

Guess the total number of kickoffs: .5 points

Guess the number of made field goals: One point

I know this has served as a kickoff tracker throughout the season, but as previously mentioned, we much like Chip Kelly, are always innovating and wanted to add some new wrinkles in addition to making the usual points worth double on Thanksgiving.

The battle for first place in the NFC East could very well rest on the leg of either Parkey or Cowboys kicker Dan Bailey, two of the best in the game at their position.

Tweet to me (@drewBbalis) your picks before kickoff.

A guess should contain five numbers, looking something like (5, 21, 20.73, 6, 3)

Additional information can be found below, and your chart will of course be updated throughout the game.

Play our game before stuffing your face so as not to piss off Claude.

Updated Contest Leaderboard:

There Will Be NO Cody Parkey Kickoff Contest This Sunday Because WE GOIN TO DA GAMEEEEEEEEEEE

Ever since Week 1 of the NFL season, this blog has served as the destination for the official Cody Parkey kickoff tracker. In Week 2 we added a contest and have had a lot of fun along the way, garnering a solid number of weekly participants and making friends with some Auburn message board folks early on who wanted to keep up with the Eagles rookie kicker.

While it does not require as much research as more of our analytical posts when time permits, this is one of my favorite things we do every Sunday. For one week though, that’s going to stop.

As you can gather from the headline, I will be going to the Eagles game on Sunday with one of my best friends. Going back to 2008, we have gone to one game every season (might do two this year). We’ve seen some good ones along the way including the 44-6 beatdown of Dallas in 2008 that miraculously put the birds in the playoffs, Brian Dawkins’ return in 2009, and last year’s insane Sunday Night throttling of the Bears that gave us “We Want Dallas” and “We’re from Philadelphia, and we fight.”

Aside from two training camp visits, I have not been in Lincoln Financial Field in 11 months, and I am so pumped to get back. It’s why, as concerning as last Sunday’s performance in Lambeau was, it’s not bothering me a ton this week knowing I’m going to watch this team live on Sunday. I don’t celebrate Christmas, but if I did, Eagles games would be my Christmas.

Last year, we sang the Eagles fight song approximately eight times as the birds put on a clinic against Chicago on a fun December night, and I’m hoping for as many or more renditions on Sunday as the Eagles look to get back on track against a struggling Titans team.

I have not even written a history lesson type of post this week because the Eagles recent history against the Titans is pretty miserable, and I just want to put that in the rearview mirror in about 58 hours.

Back to the topic at hand though, being at the game, I will not have access to a computer to run this contest live. Now, you might be thinking:

But Drew, we can still make our picks beforehand, and you can update the chart after the game once you’re home to figure out the points.

The chart will most certainly be shared afterwards, but I believe the experience of updating throughout the game is significant. We do not want to deliver a watered down product to you, so if we can’t promise our usual timeliness and social media updates, we won’t settle.

So, if you want to still submit a guess on Sunday, you are more than welcome to tweet at me, but there will be no points awarded, and no realtime notifications.

We are inviting all our usual players and anyone else who might see this and want to jump in to take the Sunday off. Don’t go far though because we’re going to make it up to you on Thursday.

Get turnt up, hella pumped, [insert any phrase that you prefer here] for Turkey Day because we’ll be going all out with the biggest contest week yet. I’m talking usual predictions worth double the points, opportunities for bonus points galore, and more as the Eagles battle the Cowboys for first place in the NFC East in a game that could easily rest on the leg of Parkey or Dan Bailey, two of the best kickers in the league.

Much like Chip Kelly, we are always trying to innovate and can’t think of a better stage than a nationally televised rivalry game to roll out some new stuff.

Our game cannot exist without the loyal community of players, and while we hate to take a week off, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t straight up giddy about heading to the Linc on Sunday. We feel we’re making the right decision in terms of delivering the best product possible.

Enjoy the chart, stats, and leaderboard below for your viewing pleasure.

From our growing family to yours, we’ll see you on Thanksgiving.

Cody Parkey Kickoff Tracker and Contest: Lambeau Field Edition

Another edition of the Cody Parkey kickoff tracker and contest is here following Monday night’s fun spectacle that had the Eagles rookie plenty busy — kicking off eight times.

If today plays out the way many expect, Parkey will have plenty of opportunities again. The catch is he will do it in cold weather for the first time in his career. Temperatures in Lambeau are expected to be hover around 20 degrees at kickoff and drop as the sun sets.

I ain’t worried, but if you want to take that into consideration when making your guess, go for it.

Tweet at me (@drewBbalis) before kickoff today guessing the number of touchbacks Parkey has AND the Packers average starting field position on his kickoffs (far right column of the chart — sans brackets)

Get your guesses in so as not to piss of Claude Giroux, and stay tuned for a big announcement to our contest coming on Wednesday or Thursday of this week.

I got 6 and 21. Your chart will of course be updated throughout the afternoon as always.
